Zebra Mussels Make It To Austin June 2017

December 8, 2017 - 10:30 AM

The impact that zebra mussels will have on our area lakes and what is being done to prevent them from spreading.

This summer we were notified that zebra mussels had been found in Lake Travis (June) and Lake Austin (August).

This is concerning for many reasons and here at LSD we like to keep our customers informed and up to date with newsworthy articles that affect their Austin Lakestyle Life.

In short zebra mussels are an invasive species that can do much damage. Below is a small outline of issues that can occur with the invasion of the species.

Zebra mussels can damage boats by encrusting boat hulls and clogging water systems used in boat motors. They can ruin props and make them useless. Also they damage air conditioners and heads and can cause navigation buoys to sink. This is just a short list of problems created by the zebra mussel.

Boaters are required to drain all water from their vessel, including live wells, bilges, motors and any other receptacles, before approaching or leaving a water body. This applies to all types and sizes of boats used on fresh waters, effective July 1.

Many of our boaters and customers here in Austin use their own boat docks and boat lifts to access our two local lakes. It is imperative that you make sure you are covered and know the steps to take to make sure these guys don’t ruin your boating season come 2018. It is our recommendation to always keep your boat out of the water and make sure you keep it clean and dry when possible.

Below is a link from the LCRA explaining the issues and steps you can take to avoid letting the zebra mussel spread.

As always if you have any questions or need any products or services give LSD a call.
